Is Majora’s Mask 3D actually happening?

Early today, a European game sales company created a listing for “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D.” Shortly after it was created, the listing was pulled from the site and no longer exists. Normally, this wouldn’t be getting so much attention, but here’s the thing. Nintendo is holding a Nintendo Direct conference tomorrow in which they will be talking about Wii and 3DS news. The fact that the listing was created just a day before Nintendo’s conference raises some suspicion. For those of you who have been living in a cave this past year, the Zelda community has been rallying behind the idea of a remake of Majora’s Mask. An online petition titles Operation Moonfall even started and received over 10,000 signatures in its first week. Due to the success of Ocarina of Time 3D, it would be a genius idea to release it’s sequel as well. For starters, the game would be much easier to develop than Ocarina of Time 3D because Majora’s Mask 3D would be using the same graphics, textures, and character models. Nintendo and Grezzo would be able to develop the game quickly and simply. Financially, this would be a great idea for Nintendo and I’m sure most Zelda fans would support it given the success of Operation Moonfall.

Personally, I think that this needs to happen. I know some of you are worried that remaking a game will take away from developing a new adventure, but given my points above, it shouldn’t take too long. Another thing to keep in mind is that Nintendo will likely have Grezzo help with the development seeing how they helped with Ocarina of Time 3D and the Four Swords Anniversary Edition.

What do you think? Are you ecstatic about the possibility of running through Termina again? Or are you hoping that this is just a giant coincidence?

This would be certainly nice, but I hope that the developers add a lot of new content to the game, instead of mostly being a faithful port like OOT 3D. I've 100%'d Majora's Mask, and the remake is going to have to have more than improved graphics if I'm going to be convinced to buy it again (blasphemy I know).
Personally I would like the remake to have:
    1. More use of the 3DS features: StreetPass and SpotPass were not implemented in OOT 3D, and while there weren't many opportunities for its use, maybe in MM it can exchange minigame highscores or dungeon/boss clear times? That would give people an incentive to play the mini-games and replay bosses and dungeons (the game allows all of these things).
    2. Even more improved graphics: OOT 3D looks miles better than on the N64, but let's face it, it wasn't exactly the graphical showcase of the 3DS. Small things like realistic lighting, dynamic shadows, and non-flat textures would have made an epic game even more epic. It's probably due to the game's engine, but the 3DS is capable of more and the developers should take advantage of that.
    3. More game content: there should be a lot more raw stuff in the remake. Nintendo should really try to innovate here instead of staying as close as possible to the original. More minigames, more side-quests, maybe even a 2P mode, etc. It wouldn't be out of the blue for Nintendo to create a totally new dungeon too. They did it with the GBC Link's Awakening and Four Swords Anniversary Edition.

I think it will be a nice addition to any Zelda fans library. Ocarina of time felt great with the improved graphics. Hell I get chills of excitement whenever I play the final battle against 3d Ganon. :p MM had a great story and used Ocarina's graphics well so I can only imagine good things when i think of MM with an Ocarina makeover

  • Looks like we will not get any info on it today. So perhaps sometime in the future

Cool! I've only just started playing Majora's Mask for the first time (I'm on the first dungeon), but even I'm excited about the idea of a 3DS remake of this game. I don't think it's a giant coincidence, but even if it is I'm pretty sure Operation Moonfall will be successful.
By the way, Matthew, there's a typo in the first paragraph when you said: "An online petition titles…" Should be a "d" instead of an "s" in "titles." :)

You shouldn't lump the entire community together as a group just because a few people piggybacked off of Operation Rainfall based on a quote that implied people had to "clamor" for it (it always irritates me when the developers say you'll only get something if you beg for it). I, personally, don't want ANOTHER remake before a new title. Am I against a revamped Majora's Mask? No, of course not, why not? But not at the expense of a 3D remade ALttP or a completely new title.

I think the series needs, a good combination of freshness and "going back to it's roots" as Mario 3D Land was for Mario. Hence why I desperately want a new game in the style of the old 2D adventures. The last one fully like that was The Minish Cap, and it was achingly short at that. The game needs a return to maze-like dungeons and free flowing combat, exploration and dialogue without any of the "baggage" that holds it down in the 3D games (Navi characters, slow chest cutscenes, relatively linear dungeons). If it does not get this, and instead tries all the time to top Ocarina of Time (when, in fact, it should be trying to top ALttP and Link's Awakening), it will eventually lead to stagnation. And nothing is more stagnant than another N64 remake, as much as I love Majora's Mask, AND I DO. I loved it when it came out, unlike some.

I just don't think it would be a good thing for the franchise. Those who haven't played it will not suddenly love it, having been told it's the second coming they may even be disappointed. Because it is an acquired taste. It was not popular when it came out, unfortunately, and I don't see a remake doing much for the franchise going forward. Can't we fit it in AFTER getting a new game? Nintendo's releases recently have been VERY dull. A rather empty year with two NSMB games as their only big hitters is rather depressing, and an N64 port won't fix that.

Anyway, enough ranting. Short version, would I like a MM remake? Yes, sure. It's a majestic game. But not before a new game. And while you can say it wouldn't get in the way of a new game… it would. It always does, even if Grezzo is doing the grunt-work.
