Aside from Four Swords and Four Swords Adventures, multiplayer modes have not been a reoccurring option in the Zelda series. A fan mod, however, is in the process of changing this for Breath of the Wild.
Modder Fooni is currently building a mod that would allow fans to use local multiplayer capabilities in the Wii U version of Breath of the Wild. In order for this multiplayer mode to work, according to the NeoGaf forum, a player is loaded into another player’s game. The location of a random NPC is then changed and model swapped to be Link. This trades items and textures to make the NPC look like a second Link.
Unfortunately, the mod won’t be ready for around a year as a playable version is currently unavailable. Perhaps 3D Zelda, with multiplayer capabilities, is the next feature Nintendo will be tackling.
