Many of the items found in Skyward Sword can be upgraded at least once. This Skyward Sword Upgrade Guide covers the effects of each upgrade, as well as what the requirements are.

Sword Upgrades

Much of the game revolves around forging the Master Sword. Your sword must be upgraded multiple times throughout the game.

  • Practice Sword: You obtain this sword at the beginning of the game. It is only used for a short time before you obtain the Goddess Sword.
  • Goddess Sword: This sword is found inside of the Statue of the Goddess. It is inhabited by Fi.
  • Goddess Longsword: Temper the Goddess Sword with Farore’s Flame to create the Goddess Longsword. It has increased power and a larger range.
  • Goddess White Sword: Temper the Goddess Longsword with Nayru’s Flame to create the Goddess White Sword. It allows you to dowse for more items.
  • Master Sword: Temper the Goddess White Sword with Din’s Flame to create the Master Sword.
  • True Master Sword: Have Zelda bless the Master Sword to create the True Master Sword.

Skyward Sword Upgrades

Shields

There are three types of shields in Skyward Sword: wooden shields, iron shields, and sacred shields.

Wooden Shields
The wooden shields burn easily; however, they are impervious to electrical attacks.

  • Wooden Shield: You can receive the Wooden Shield early in the game from Owlan. If you miss this chance, or if it breaks or burns, you can buy a new one at the Item Shop in the Bazaar for 50 rupees. This is the weakest shield in the game and breaks easily.
  • Banded Shield: The Wooden Shield can be upgraded to the Banded Shield at the Scrap Shop in the Bazaar for 30 rupees, 2 Amber Relics, 1 Monster Claw, and 1 Jelly Blob. It is much more resistant to attacks and offers greater protection.
  • Braced Shield: The Banded Shield can be upgraded to the Braced Shield at the Scrap Shop for 50 rupees, 3 Amber Relics, 2 Monster Claws, 2 Tumbleweeds, and 1 Ornamental Skull. It is the strongest of the wooden shields.

Iron Shields
The iron shields are more durable than the wooden shields, and they do not burn; however, unlike the wooden shields, they are weak against electrical attacks.

  • Iron Shield: After you have completed the Skyview Temple, the Iron Shield will be available in the Item Shop for 100 rupees.
  • Reinforced Shield: The Iron Shield can be upgraded to the Reinforced Shield at the Scrap Shop for 50 rupees, 2 Eldin Ore, 2 Monster Claws, and 2 Ornamental Skulls. It is more resistant to attacks than the Iron Shield.
  • Fortified Shield: The Reinforced Shield can be upgraded to the Fortified Shield at the Scrap Shop for 100 rupees, 3 Eldin Ore, 3 Monster Claws, 3 Tumbleweeds, and 1 Blue Bird Feather. It is the most durable of the iron shields.

Sacred Shields
The sacred shields have short damage meters, but they are very durable and resist many attacks. They also slowly repair themselves over time.

  • Sacred Shield: After you complete the Lanayru Mining Facility, the Sacred Shield will be available in the item shop for 500 rupees.
  • Divine Shield: The Sacred Shield can be upgraded to the Divine Shield at the Scrap Shop for 100 rupees, 2 Bird Feathers, 1 Dusk Relic, and 1 Ornamental Skull. It has improved durability.
  • Goddess Shield: The Divine Shield can be upgraded to the Goddess Shield at the Scrap Shop for 150 rupees, 4 Dusk Relics, 3 Bird Feathers, 3 Monster Horns, and 1 Blue Bird Feather. It is the strongest of the sacred shields.

Inventory Items

Slingshot
The Slingshot is found early in the game, while you are on your way to the Skyview Temple. Back in Skyloft you can upgrade it to the Scattershot at the Scrap Shop for 50 rupees, 2 Amber Relics, 2 Dusk Relics, and 3 Jelly Blobs. It allows you to fire multiple shots at once, while only consuming one seed.

Beetle
The Beetle is the dungeon item for Skyview Temple. It can be upgraded three times throughout the game.

  • Hook Beetle: In Lanayru Desert, the Beetle will be upgraded to the Hook Beetle, giving it the ability to pick up items and drop them on targets.
  • Quick Beetle: The Hook Beetle can be upgraded to the Quick Beetle at the Scrap Shop for 50 rupees, 2 Ancient Flowers, 2 Hornet Larvae, and 1 Golden Skull. It can fly faster, and therefore farther, than the previous versions.
  • Tough Beetle: The Quick Beetle can be upgraded to the Tough Beetle at the Scrap Shop for 50 rupees, 3 Ancient Flowers, 4 Amber Relics, 1 Blue Bird Feather, and 1 Goddess Plume. It can fly for longer amounts of time before running out of power.


Bug Net
The Bug Net can be bought in Beedle’s shop for 50 rupees. It can be upgraded to the Big Bug Net for 100 rupees, 3 Tumbleweeds, 2 Ancient Flowers, and 1 Evil Crystal. It lets you catch multiple bugs or birds with a single swing.

Bow
The Bow is the dungeon item for the Sandship. It can be upgraded twice throughout the game.

  • Iron Bow: The Bow can be upgraded to the Iron Bow at the Scrap Shop for 50 rupees, 1 Evil Crystal, 3 Monster Claws, and 2 Eldin Ore. It shoots arrows with increased power.
  • Sacred Bow: The Iron Bow can be upgraded to the Sacred Bow at the Scrap Shop for 100 rupees, 5 Tumbleweeds, 2 Evil Crystals, 3 Lizard Tails, and 1 Goddess Plume. It shoots arrows with maximum power.


Digging Mitts
The Digging Mitts are given to you by the Mogmas on your way to the Earth Temple. An upgraded version, the Mogma Mitts, are the dungeon item for the Fire Sanctuary. They allow you to not only dig holes, but also create tunnels to access new areas.

Potions

Heart Potion
The standard Heart Potion restores 8 hearts. It can be upgraded twice to improve its effectiveness.

  • Heart Potion+: The Heart Potion can be upgraded to the Heart Potion+ at the Infusion Shop for 20 rupees, 3 Blessed Butterflies, 1 Volcanic Ladybug, and 1 Woodland Rhino Beetle. It restores all of your health.
  • Heart Potion++: The Heart Potion+ can be upgraded to the Heart Potion++ at the Infusion Shop for 30 rupees, 3 Blessed Butterflies, 3 Deku Hornets, 1 Eldin Roller, and 1 Sand Cicada. It stores two servings of Heart Potion+ in one bottle.


Stamina Potion
The Stamina Potion restores your stamina meter and prevents it from going down for a short period of time. It can be upgraded to the Stamina Potion+ at the Infusion Shop for 20 rupees, 3 Volcanic Ladybugs, 2 Sky Stag Beetles, 2 Gerudo Dragonflies, and 1 Faron Grasshopper. The Stamina Potion+ increases the amount of time for which you will have infinite stamina to three minutes.

Air Potion
The Air Potion allows Link to swim without losing any air. It can be upgraded to the Air Potion+ at the Infusion Shop for 20 rupees, 2 Lanayru Ants, 2 Skyloft Mantises, and 2 Sky Stag Beetles. The Air Potion+ increases the amount of time for which you will have infinite air to three minutes.

Revitalizing Potion
The Revitalizing Potion fully repairs any shield and restores your health by four hearts. It can be upgraded to improve its effectiveness.

  • Revitalizing Potion+: The Revitalizing Potion can be upgraded to the Revitalizing Potion+ at the Infusion Shop for 20 rupees, 3 Deku Hornets, 2 Skyloft Mantises, and 2 Woodland Rhino Beetles. It increases the health restoration from four hearts to eight hearts.
  • Revitalizing Potion++: The Revitalizing Potion+ can be upgraded to the Revitalizing Potion++ at the Infusion Shop for 30 rupees, 3 Lanayru Ants, 2 Woodland Rhino Beetles, 1 Gerudo Dragonfly, and 1 Sand Cicada. It stores two servings of Revitalizing Potion+ in one bottle.


Guardian Potion
The Guardian Potion cuts damage in half for a short period of time. It can be upgraded to the Guardian Potion+ at the Infusion Shop for 40 rupees, 2 Lanayru Ants, 2 Skyloft Mantises, and 2 Sky Stag Beetles. The Guardian Potion+ makes you immune to all damage for a short period of time.

Pouches, Bags, Etc…

Seed Satchel
A Seed Satchel which can hold 20 Deku Seeds comes with the Slingshot.

  • Small Seed Satchel: You can find two extra Small Seed Satchels to carry more Deku Seeds. Each holds up to 10 Deku Seeds. However, these fill up slots in your Adventure Pouch. One can be purchased from the Item Shop for 100 rupees after you have completed the Skyview Temple. A second can be found by activating a Goddess Cube found on Eldin Volcano. The chest appears west of Fun Fun Island.
  • Medium Seed Satchel: Small Seed Satchels can be upgraded to Medium Seed Satchels in the Scrap Shop for 4 Amber Relics, 3 Monster Claws, and 3 Ornamental Skulls. These hold up to 20 Deku Seeds each.
  • Large Seed Satchel: Medium Seed Satchels can be upgraded to Large Seed Satchels in the Scrap Shop for 100 rupees, 5 Amber Relics, 3 Monster Claws, 1 Blue Bird Feather, and 1 Golden Skull. These hold up to 30 Deku Seeds each.


Bomb Bag
You receive your first Bomb Bag, which can hold 10 bombs, as the dungeon item for the Earth Temple.

  • Small Bomb Bag: There is a Small Bomb Bag which lets you hold an additional 5 bombs. It can be purchased from the Gear Shop for 150 rupees. It takes up one slot in the Adventure Pouch.
  • Medium Bomb Bag: The Small Bomb Bag can be upgraded to a Medium Bomb Bag at the Scrap Shop for 4 Lizard Tails, 3 Ornamental Skulls, and 1 Blue Bird Feather. It holds up to 10 bombs.
  • Large Bomb Bag: The Medium Bomb Bag can be upgraded to a Large Bomb Bag at the Scrap Shop for 3 Lizard Tails, 4 Jelly Blobs, 2 Hornet Larvae, and 1 Golden Skull. It holds up to 15 bombs.


Quiver
A quiver which holds 20 arrows comes when you get the Bow.

  • Small Quiver: A Small Quiver can be purchased from the Gear Shop for 150 rupees. It holds up to 5 additional arrows, but it takes up a slot in the Adventure Pouch.
  • Medium Quiver: The Small Quiver can be upgraded to a Medium Quiver at the Scrap Shop for 50 rupees, 5 Amber Relics, 3 Dusk Relics, and 3 Monster Horns. It holds up to 20 arrows.
  • Large Quiver: The Medium Quiver can be upgraded to a Large Quiver at the Scrap Shop for 100 rupees, 3 Dusk Relics, 2 Monster Horns, 1 Goddess Plume, and 1 Golden Skull. It holds up to 25 arrows.


Wallet
The Small Wallet holds 300 rupees.

  • Extra Wallet: Two extra Small Wallets can be purchased from Beedle for 100 rupees each.
  • Medium Wallet: Give Batreaux 5 Gratitude Crystals to turn your original wallet into a Medium Wallet. It can hold 500 rupees.
  • Big Wallet: Give Batreaux 30 Gratitude Crystals to turn your Medium Wallet into a Big Wallet. It can hold 1000 rupees.
  • Giant Wallet: Give Batreaux 50 Gratitude Crystals to turn your Big Wallet into a Giant Wallet. It can hold 5000 rupees.
  • Tycoon Wallet: Give Batreaux all 80 Gratitude Crystals to turn your Giant Wallet into a Tycoon Wallet. It can hold 9000 rupees.


Adventure Pouch
The Adventure Pouch can initially store four items, and four slots can be added to the Adventure Pouch.

  • Activate a Goddess Cube in Faron Woods to make a chest appear on Pumpkin Landing with the extra slot.
  • Purchase an extra slot from Beedle for 300 rupees.
  • Purchase an extra slot from Beedle for 600 rupees.
  • Purchase an extra slot from Beedle for 1200 rupees.
