Eiji Aonuma: Link Will Be “Explicitly Called Link from the Very Beginning”

As fans know, Breath of the Wild will include many new qualities that are different from previous Zelda games. In Nintendo Deutschland‘s most recent video, Eiji Aonuma, producer and manager for the Zelda series, reveals that there will be no option to change Link’s name in Breath of the Wild.

Two minutes and thirty-six seconds into the video, the interpreter states that “In this title, the hero of the story is actually explicitly called Link from the very start.”

Now, this is to be expected, I think. Being the first game in the Zelda series to include voice acting, it makes sense that the player will be addressed as Link. For many fans, Link essentially acted as a stand-in avatar that players could identify with due to the ability to change his name. However, in Breath of the Wild, Link will be an established character.

This is an interesting change, to say the least. When I was a kid, my brother and I would share games and he would always name his save file under “Link.” To be able to differentiate them, I would name my file after me. I have grown to prefer being addressed as Hannah in games like this because, personally, it makes the gameplay and story a little more sentimental. That is how I have always felt about it. We asked for voice acting, but no longer have the ability to change Link’s name. I think that is a practical and fair trade, considering how excited we are to hear Breath of the Wild’s story come to life.
